“Sonder” is a fake philosophical term that explores the emotional experience of realizing that every passerby leads a life as vivid and complex as our own. Rooted in this intriguing concept, the collection uses fashion as a medium for storytelling, blurring the line between daily anonymity and the profound depth of human lifespan.
Inspired by AI-generated portraits of ambiguous strangers and by collecting intimate diary entries, the project translates emotional nuance into garments through a hybrid approach of 2D vs 3D experimentation and precise tailoring. Historical references—like 19th-century mourning and wedding gowns—are reimagined with bold silhouettes and structured suiting in this project, visualizing the contrast and the tension between daily mundane and unconventional facets.

Bio

Chenchen Liu is a New York-based fashion designer studying at Parsons School of Design. Her work explores the balance between abstract concepts and precise tailoring, treating garments as a form of wearable art. Inspired by philosophical ideas and subtle emotion, Chenchen transforms intangible narratives into visual language through extensive 2D and 3D research. Her designs achieve bold silhouettes with a strong sense of wearability by merging pattern cutting, draping, and traditional tailoring techniques. Her creative process focuses on storytelling through fabric, structure, and detail. While at Parsons, Chenchen interned at the Oscar de la Renta Atelier department and at Markarian NYC, where she gained hands-on experience in luxury womenswear craftsmanship.
