Girly Guts by Gigi Gibowicz

Girly Guts draws on Gigi's own experience with bodily inside-outness and its connection to femininity. As a child, she lived with two ostomies for a period of time, hence the term “inside-outness” which is often synonymous with gore and grossness. She references intestinal textures and shapes through her textile fabrication of "guts" and channel spiral ruching throughout the collection. She deals with archetypal feminine silhouettes and distorts them into a unique commentary on bodily inside-outness and its relationship to femininity.
As a designer and as a person Gigi has always been attracted to ultra-femininity. Using girly aesthetics, colors, silhouettes, and materials, she uses femininity as a tool to turn gross and gory into beautiful while also comparing the vulnerability of femininity with the vulnerability of bodily inside-outness. This collection is size inclusive, which provides new and exciting forms to work with that expand beyond a size 6. Girly Guts rejects typical fashion standards by doing so and also by celebrating the grotesque and abject aspects of femininity and the body.

Sustainability

Most of the yardage in this collection is second-hand or recycled, sourced from Fabscrap in Brooklyn, New York and various Parsons fabric donations as well as my own personal collection. I used both synthetic and natural beet dyeing to achieve desired colors on found fabrics.
I color sorted fabric scraps that I have collected from my projects throughout my time at Parsons. I practice zero waste processes and use leftover materials to create guts, my own textile fabrication featured in Girly Guts. In addition, scraps from the collection itself have been included in the guts to create a more cohesive look while also making the collection zero-waste.

Bio

Gigi Gibowicz is an American fashion designer and artist based in New York City. Her work in fashion began when her 2D work became increasingly more focused on the body and her art gradually shifted into recognizable fashion forms. Gibowicz’s work explores the female form through a queer lens and celebrates all shapes and sizes including larger bodies and disabled bodies.

Gibowicz uses recycled and repurposed materials that hold memory and meaning while also being environmentally conscious. She often uses unconventional, found, and collected materials to create complex textiles that become unique and intricate garments. Gigi’s soft sculptural work echoes her fine arts background and emphasizes her skills in garment construction, creating wearable art that centers femininity and inclusivity.
