UNTRACE:HK

Untrace: Hong Kong is a thesis rooted in personal exploration, seeking to reframe the narrative of Hong Kong through the lens of identity, memory, and cultural inheritance, in a way that resonates more deeply to my own sense of self.
This thesis draws inspiration from a combination of historical archives and first-hand photographs I’ve captured during my return visits to Hong Kong—fragments of time, texture, and space that offer glimpses into both the visible and invisible layers of the city. The stories that were etched into its walls, the hands that built its shape, or the spirits that breathe life into its quietest alleyways. Through this project, I construct a visual and tactile narrative that bridges personal memory as an extension of a collective experience. It retraces my memories, gives voice to the overlooked, and reshapes how we view and remember the taste of home.
Image: I was born and raised in Hong Kong, the only home I had ever known, until I left for New York to begin college on my own. I still remember that freshman year, during the quiet isolation of the pandemic, when I was unable to return for over nine months. I realized how intimately the city lives within me, and how unfamiliar it remains to others. In that distance, I felt the weight of belonging.

The fabric story is inspired by a fashion history archive I retrieved from the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Alongside traditional textiles like wool, I am incorporating my own interpretation of the city's textures in textiles. Most of the fabrics were sourced in traditional style fabric huts in Hong Kong.

Bio

From a young age, I have been captivated by the concept of beauty and uniqueness, constantly questioning what beauty means to me and to others. As I grew older, I realized that differing perceptions of beauty are what shape individual styles and personalities. My design aesthetic is deeply rooted in my own interpretation of the subject, encompassing timeless designs with attention to detail, allowing my character and culture to be reflected in every piece I create. Through my work, I strive to spark creativity in others and empower them to confidently express their own vision.
