Design Statement
My thesis project draws inspiration from a series of unintentionally captured out-of-focus photographs. These blurred images inspired me because they carry a sense of ambiguity while still offering subtle hints of information. This concept of defocus strongly resonates with my personal experiences as I reflect on the process of growing up. As a child, I was taught clear rules and the world appeared in black-and-white.
However, as I grew older, I began to realize that the world is not as sharply defined as I once thought. Boundaries began to blur, and the clear distinctions between right and wrong began to fade just like the out-of-focus-photograph. I aim to transfer the blurring ideas into garment and textiles, in which I explore how blurring serves as the abstraction of already existing lines and contours; and also the ideas of overlaying and duplicating. Through this project, I aim to express the confusion, haziness, and ambiguity that come with growth .
