Makayla Zhang
Bio
Makayla Zhang is a Chinese-born fashion designer based in New York City, currently completing her BFA in Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. After moving to the U.S. for high school, she developed a cross-cultural design voice shaped by both Eastern and Western aesthetics. A multi-year recipient of the Parsons Scholarship and a 2024 CFDA Scholarship Fund Finalist, Makayla is passionate about innovation and constantly explores new technologies and materials to push creative boundaries. Her work focuses on genderless fashion and avant-garde silhouettes that challenge convention and encourage wearers to step outside their comfort zones. Inspired by her personal experience with autism, her thesis collection explores themes of silence, isolation, and resilience through futuristic, hybrid beings—part machine, part organic. Each garment contrasts hard structures with soft lines to express emotional tension and the desire for connection.
Makayla sees fashion as a language for self-expression and transformation. Using tools like Midjourney, Clo3D, and 3D printing, she blends digital experimentation with craftsmanship to create sculptural, emotionally driven designs.
