Bio

Sarah Mann, a Massachusetts-born women's wear designer, is gaining attention for her avant-garde collections, which incorporate the theme of women embracing their identity and revealing themselves to the world. She is currently completing her BFA in Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. Upon graduation, Sarah plans to reside in the city, work for a fashion company, and have her own brand someday.

My senior thesis project consists of a collection of five garments that I designed that encapsulate my journey of self-revelation, which is both universal and personal to me. I explore through the creation of avant-garde eveningwear how a person’s “true identity” can often be hidden within themselves until they have the courage to reveal it. The word 'Hester' in the bible translates to "something hidden" and literally means "hiding face," and today challenges humans to search beyond what is seen.

I am inspired by this concept and began exploring the idea of a person hiding aspects of themselves that cannot be physically seen, and those parts of our identity that we keep veiled from the world. The act of concealing one’s true self, whether out of fear, societal pressure, or self-doubt, takes an emotional toll on a person's well-being. The hope is that individuals who suffer from 'Hester' will eventually reach a point where they no longer feel the need to conceal their identity, and then eventually they will be able to reveal themselves fully with no inhibitions so that they can achieve their true potential and allow the world to see them as they truly are.
