Concept Statement
Through utilizing latex in the context of formal wear I propose that the intersection of BDSM and sex work is a form of surrealist art. By narrowing my focus on the fetish of female domination I argue that this theatrical performance of sex and gender is a camp expression of feminity. The historical and contemporary context of latex in collaboration with surrealist paintings by Dorothea Tanning inform the silhouettes and methods of construction as well as design approaches for my collection.
With this collection I aim to provoke conversations surrounding discrimination sex workers face and the cultural appropriation of sex work and BDSM culture within the fashion industry. I accomplished this by conducting interviews with sex workers, having sex workers model my collection, and utilizing academic research on the sex trades and its relationship with gender theory.
