Maternal Seperation

My thesis explores the complexities of my identity, shaped by the dual roles I play in life and the emotional struggles they bring. Through my design, I want to share the tension between Daisy, the free and independent side of me, and Xiyu, the obedient, self-sacrificing daughter bound by family expectations. These roles often leave me questioning who I truly am, as I navigate between being what others need and what I want for myself.
My work explores maternal separation and the emotional complexities of role reversal. Growing up, I stepped into a caretaker role for my mother, blurring boundaries and creating a cycle of dependency. This inversion has deeply shaped my identity, leaving me to navigate conflicting emotions and shifting roles—like wearing masks to meet different expectations. Through my designs, I confront this trauma, examining the layers of self that formed between my needs and hers. This project is a journey of healing—an attempt to understand where my identity begins and ends, and how, through separation, I can reclaim it.

Bio

Xiyu 玺钰 means jade, it evokes the imperial jade seal, a symbol of authority and guardianship—bestowed with meaning by those who named me. My name holds the weight of my family’s beautiful hopes—a blessing, and a burden.

I am Xiyu Han, or you can call me Daisy, a fashion designer drawn to the quiet tension between freedom and duty, self and other. My work lives in the space between identities—where memory, emotion, and form intertwine. Having grown up shifting between roles, I often design from a place of internal dialogue, where garments become vessels for contradiction, reflection, and release.

As a digital fashion designer, I move through virtual space to explore the fluidity of identity and the emotions clothing can carry beyond the physical world. Using tools like Clo3D, Blender, and Adobe Suite, I translate inner narratives into digital garments—pieces that exist between memory and imagination. In this space, I’m not bound by material limits; instead, I sculpt emotion, tell stories, and create presence where there is none.
